Information and Referral

Our information and referral service is a reliable resource for individuals, organizations, and businesses seeking information on disability rights, options, and services. We provide guidance on issues affecting people with disabilities, including civil rights, accessibility, and available community resources. Our goal is to ensure people with disabilities have the knowledge and support they need to make informed decisions and fully participate in their communities.

Transition Services

We empower people with disabilities to live independently by facilitating relocation from nursing homes and institutions to home and community-based living. Our dedicated team provides personalized support to ensure a smooth transition, connecting individuals with essential resources such as housing, healthcare, and community services.

In addition to assisting those currently in institutions, we work with individuals at risk of institutionalization, helping them access the necessary supports to remain in their homes and communities. For young people with disabilities, we offer guidance and resources to ease the transition into higher education, employment, and independent living, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to thrive in their next stage of life.

Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Support

We serve people with disabilities who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault. We support survivors to exercise their rights to establish and maintain control over their own lives. Our peer support model means to employ people with disabilities who have lived-experience with domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

The role of the DVSA advocate is to:

  • Support and connect survivors to community and internal services.
  • Promote and model quality life skills to enhance independence.
  • Provide information and support in a mentoring-type relationship.
  • Provide confidential record keeping and services.

Peer Support and Mentoring

Peer support is essential to our philosophy and overall approach to service delivery. Most of our staff and volunteers are people with disabilities who work with our consumers to explore options and solve problems. Because of their own experiences, staff and volunteers provide unique and creative ideas to others living with disabilities as well as true peer support.

This service is designed to promote personal independence for people with disabilities by providing opportunities for them to meet exceptional mentors with a similar disability(s) or experiences. The purpose of the service is to provide practical, real life solutions to everyday problems encountered as a result of a disability.

Peer Support Group meetings include:

  • Dis-Queer: A Disability LGBTQIA+ Support Group
  • Neurodiverse Peer Support Group
  • Amputee Support Group
  • Families of Visually Impaired Individuals Support Group
  • Spinal Cord Injury Support Group
  • Financial Independence Support Group

Individual and Systemic Advocacy

We advocate for people with disabilities at both the individual and systemic levels to promote independence, accessibility, and inclusion. We support individuals in understanding and exercising their rights, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to take control of their lives.

At the systemic level, we work with government agencies, businesses, and organizations to educate them on the capabilities and needs of people with disabilities. Our advocacy efforts extend to local, state, and national levels, where we push for policy changes, fight against discriminatory practices, and work to remove barriers that hinder independent living. Through education and action, we strive to create a more equitable and accessible society for all.

VIBE

Visually Impaired Blind Experience (VIBE) works with people who are visually impaired and blind to maintain and remain independent in their own environments. Staff work to identify and overcome barriers through supports from assistive technology, peer counseling, community programs, and more.

Assistive technology often enables people with disabilities to perform personal, work recreational and social functions that would otherwise not be possible. Individuals can acquire some items through accessABILITY at no cost.

Independent Living Skills Training

accessABILITY offers training and real-world practice for a variety of basic living skills to people who are experiencing independent living for the first time, adapting to a new disability or adjusting to change. Our Independent Living advocates will work with you in your own environment to set and achieve your personal goals.
